Hawking's Childhood
Stephen Hawking’s family also showed unique talent. His mother became one of the first female students to attend Oxford University. His father also attended and graduated Oxford University and became a well respected medical researcher. Hawkings had two biological siblings as well as a brother who his parents later adopted. The family was often described as being eccentric. Many people who are considered gifted are also viewed as being eccentric, so this is yet another gifted characteristic that was displayed by him and his family as well.
Although Hawking was considered a bright student, his primary interests were held outside of the classroom. During these times, the traditional classroom did not support his exceptionality. He would often get bored with his studies, and his teachers never tapped into his giftedness. When he was 16, he built a computer out of recycled parts. This occurred in 1958 when computers were not so familiar to society. He was a creative and energetic child. As a child, he devised different entry routes into his home. This exhibited his creativity and problem solving skills.
